It seems like every time I buy something new, in a week it is outdated and something better has hit the scene. This includes the Kindle, as I recently purchased one for my wife. Now she enjoys the convenience of the Kindle and the ease of use, but of course Amazon has just announced the Kindle Fire. And if I would have held out a little longer I probably would have picked up the Kindle Fire for her, and below are some of the reasons why.

Journey Set To Begin In Spring 2012

[caption id="attachment_98902" align="aligncenter" width="525" caption="Don't stop believing"]Journey on PSN[/caption]

Journey is the latest game from developer thatgamecompany. And they have been tight-lipped about the release date or even a time-frame for their latest game. Many fans had high hopes of a 2011 release, probably fueled by the recent closed beta for the game. However, it wasn’t until yesterday that thatgamecompany made any announcement about its release.   In a post on the company website, co-founder Jenova Chen thanked the beta testers and supporters:

For the past few months, we kept getting asked about Journey’s release date. Yes, we haven’t said anything about our release in a while mainly because we really couldn’t tell. And we don’t want to throw out a date that we are not sure about, and later disappoint our players...
...We are happy to announce Journey will be released Spring 2012, so you can experience the adventure for yourself.

This is another game on my list of “Games I’m looking forward to”.   Granted, on paper this game doesn’t sound very interesting. Just playing as a robed figure, unable to communicate with others online, with no instructions or map, the player just travels across a desert toward a mountain in the distance.   Honestly, it sounds like it could be boring.  But then again, Flower was one of my first loves on the PSN, and it doesn’t exactly jump off the page either.   Flower is an experience that betrays attempts to describe it; I have the same hopes for Journey.  So even with this ‘delay’ and the seemingly action-lacking gameplay, I know this game will be an experience I won’t want to miss.

A Simple Question: Collector's Edition Games((tag: tumblrize,Aaa Titles,Amp,Asq,Bonus Materials,Elder Scrolls,Exclusivity,Favorite Game,Gears,Gears of War,Last Time,Market Research,Modern Warfare,Original Cost,Price Tag,Rock Band,Segment,Special Editions,

Call it what you want, Players Edition, Collector's Edition, Hardened Edition: some big profile games get the special treatment, with special packaging, bonus materials, and a higher price tag.  You can check this list to see if your favorite game was a collector's edition at one point. With some upcoming AAA titles featuring some rather robust Special Edition bundles, including Modern Warfare 3 and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, it got me thinking about why people buy these special editions.

What feature most appeals to you when purchasing a game's Collector's Edition?

(You may need to refresh the page to see the poll)

Online Surveys & Market Research

There's a lot of options to choose from, so pick the one that typically most influences your decision to purchase these types of games (and yes, I know that influence can vary based on the game).  Me personally, I honestly can't remember the last time I picked up a Collector's Edition version of a game; I certainly have not done so with any current generation consoles.  I don't really count Rock Band, since you need the instruments to play, but if I had to give a driving reason behind purchasing a collector's edition, it would probably be for bonus major physical items.  It would take something major to upsell me to spend sometimes more than double the original cost of a game.  But that's just me.

Hands-On Preview Of Grotesque Tactics 2: Dungeons And Donuts((tag: tumblrize,Action Rpg,Baldur S Gate,Bounties,Denizens,Donuts,Fantasy Rpg,Fantasy Rpgs,Fine Balance,Free Moves,New Game,Npc,Npcs,Play Area,Pokemon Games,Pokemon Rpg,Potions,Professor Oak,Rol

Grotesque Tactics 2: Dungeons And Donuts

Grotesque Tactics 2: Dungeons and Donuts is a new game from Meridian4 in the vein of the old Bard's Tales games and the newer DeathSpank series. It combines hardcore RPG action with a sense of humor that satirizes modern role-playing games but also remains a solid entry into the turn-based RPG genre.

We recently got our hands on a preview build of Grotesque Tactics 2 that was a bit rough around the edges but already showed the game's comedic potential. One of the game's earliest gags had me meeting up with a NPC named after Professor Oak from the Pokémon RPG games and mocked the start-up conversation featured in all the Pokémon games. The game shows off  the love Meridian4 has for RPG's and the game strikes a fine balance between being an homage to the genre but also mocking it's overused conventions.

Grotesque Tactics 2 D and D

The mechanics of the game are set up like a strategy RPG  that has you traveling dungeons until you encounter an enemy, at this point a grid-like overlay appears beneath the play area. You then receive a set amount of spaces to move on your turn, after that you choose between an attack, special attack, wait, or defend action but you are also allowed to use potions at will. From that point each encounter is turn-based with positioning off attacks being crucial for effective attacks on the enemy.

Quests usual feature witty banter between your character and the NPCs and for the most part consist of the usual variety of fetch quests and boss bounties found in many fantasy RPG's. Along with these quests you will also be tasked with making a variety of foods to please the various denizens of the underground kingdom the game uses as its hub. There's also a guild system that will have you recruiting unique companions that will help you along your quest against the Fog that is invading the land. The snide comments and banter made by your companions is what really makes the sometimes repetitive adventuring worthwhile.

Grotesque Tactics 2: Dungeons and Donuts gathers its DNA from action RPG's like Baldur's Gate and turned-based fantasy RPGs like Final Fantasy. It does a great job of challenging the player with turn-based encounters that are broken up by a great sense of humor that saturates every part of the game. I look forward to seeing what the retail build of Grotesque Tactics 2: Dungeons and Donuts has to offer when it's released on October 15, 2011.
